Although the television might have only shown black and white, the 50s was characterized by an overabundance of bright, saturated colors, sometimes to a disconcerting degree. The decade also saw the rise of the “Long Play” record format, popularizing the record players and turntables that are being revived today. It seems only fitting that a true-blooded vintage record player pays homage to its roots, at least on the surface.

The Brad Retro Mk II definitely looks the part with its boxy designs, analog controls, and, more importantly, its colorful personality. With a belt-driven mechanism, three-speed play, and support for 7-12″ vinyl, this retro-style record player brings out the analog goodness of the medium, letting you hear it just the way the music was supposed to be heard. Although hardly the first of its kind, the Nintendo Switch definitely kicked off a handheld gaming renaissance. Now we have mini PCs letting us play all sorts of games on the go and innumerable projects that try to cobble up together their own handheld console. The latter has given rise to many unconventional designs, though most follow the standard combination of buttons and joysticks found on gaming controllers.

One designer, however, went out of his way to do something different thanks to his dislike of joysticks. The result is a unique and rather curious handheld device that combines the clamshell form factor of the Nintendo DS and the guts of a laptop, and then stretches it wide to a rather unusual degree.

There are a few things quite unconventional about this ultra-wide Steam Deck Nintendo DS hybrid, not just its super-wide form factor. Actually, that shape was a result of the decision to repurpose the usable motherboard of a broken Lenovo laptop, which happened to be roughly 13 inches wide. But unlike another DIY Steam Deck that did the same with a modular Framework laptop motherboard, the “DS Deck” didn’t go the usual joysticks and buttons layout either.

Since the goal was to ditch the joystick and replace it with a more PC-oriented keyboard and trackpad, a new kind of shell design was needed. Long story short, it required looking for a compatible 12.7-inch screen that happened to also be in an ultra-wide aspect ratio. These restrictions and requirements led to a design that followed the footsteps of the clamshell DS, which made for a rather interesting device.

While time and effort were saved in using the laptop motherboard as-is, more time was spent designing a custom circuit board for the non-standard keyboard and button layout. There was plenty of soldering and assembly involved, not to mention repairs of data cables that were accidentally torn off. Suffice it to say, this is a project very few will be able to follow.

Still, the final result is just as interesting and special. The DS Deck is able to run a full operating system like Windows or Linux because it basically uses the same motherboard and battery as the source laptop. Widescreen compatibility with games is a mixed bag, but one can always run two windows side-by-side thanks to the screen size. The custom design definitely needs a lot of work, as it doesn’t take into account safety and heat management, but the fact that it even works is itself already a commendable accomplishment.

Skate Break is the result of that convergence, transforming one space into another without breaking too much of a sweat.

Just like a hi-tech showroom or a sci-fi transforming room, Skate Break’s furniture stands as honest-to-goodness functional office equipment one moment and skate ramps the next. As long as you have ample room between these pieces of furniture, you don’t even have to move them out of the way and bring them back in after you’re done. It’s not instantaneous, of course, but it sure beats having to constantly move things around whenever you want to switch from one mode to another.

There’s definitely some ingenious design involved, like a boardroom table that can be taken apart to become a pyramid ramp and a grind ledge. The standing desk uses a lever system to reveal a hidden ramp on which to skate. Don’t worry, the large computer screen is protected by transparent plexiglass, so you can confidently skate up and down over it.

The oversized Lamp Ramp is probably one of the more striking pieces, composed of what looks like a gigantic flower-shaped fanning shade and an arched stand. When a pin and the counterweight dumbbell are removed, the shade moves down until it touches the floor, creating a small volcano ramp and rainbow rail.

Skating inside the office might not be the smartest decision, especially if you don’t have protective gear available. It’s still a fun idea to turn an office into a playground and back again, seamlessly shifting gears as the need or desire arises. And as many companies with high creative output have proven, such a lifestyle can actually be beneficial to both employees and employers, as long as they don’t get into accidents.

Seats like chairs and benches have designs that immediately convey images of stability and reliability, often expressed in shapes that look solid, balanced, and strong. Looks can be deceiving, as they say, and it is often the materials and structures that give a chair those properties. A chair might look like a balloon that can pop any minute but is actually made of powder-coated metal instead.

This collection of backless benches and stools also gives that impression, appearing as thin, soft sheets of metal rolled like sheets of paper. Of course, they’re actually usable seating furniture despite their fragile appearances, giving any room a distinctive visual that develops a unique character over time.

Paper is one of the most bendable and fragile solid materials that everyone is familiar with. Ancient papyrus scrolls are known to be brittle even when they were in use, and toilet paper is easily torn or even dissolved when wet. It’s definitely not something you’d want to sit on, yet rolls of paper are exactly the inspiration behind this collection of thin metal seats, teasing the mind whether to believe their eyes or their brains instead.

Named after the aluminum material used to construct these simple yet elegant forms, the “Alu” collection looks like scrolls unraveling and frozen in time. The two remaining rolled ends function as the solid feet that support the structure, while the wavy curves above welcome the bodies of people sitting on them. Given their extra-thin profile, one might be a bit reluctant to surrender themselves to the allure of the benches, yet that is also part of the charm and call to adventure that these unique seats give.

You can’t go more minimalist than a single sheet of metal bent, curved, and rolled to shape. There are no backrests, no armrests, no decorations – just a single unbroken surface with no other details to be seen. Its beauty comes from the gentle curves of the form itself, letting the mind wander and fill in the blanks to their own satisfaction.

At the same time, the Alu collection exudes a brutalist quality, both for the unfinished versions and even for brushed aluminum. These surfaces will develop their own unique patina over the course of their use, from the wear and tear of the environment to the natural oils from people’s hands and bodies. Unique not only in its design but also in its long-term narrative, the Alu benches and stools demonstrate how much you can pull out from a single sheet of material.

Even with the proliferation of video games, there is still a strong culture surrounding pen-and-paper games, also known as tabletop games. Many of these involve a variety of dice, not just the six-sided one that almost everyone is familiar with. In fact, it has become a tradition for these gamers to have dozens of dice of different colors and designs, even though you’ll only really need at most 6 at a time.

Physically rolling the die definitely has a special feeling to it, heightening the tension in some cases, but it isn’t always practical to bring one around with you. The one thing you will always have with you, however, is a wristwatch. Whether it’s for a serious Dungeons & Dragons session or just some whimsical randomness, this retro-looking digital watch is all that you really need for those critical hits or critical fails.

While everyone is probably familiar with the six-sided die used in board games and even casinos, tabletop gamers are probably more familiar with the 20-sided variety, fondly called a “d20” die. In fact, this distinctive design has become the icon of many role-playing games, businesses, and products, but it actually isn’t the only unusual dice in this market.

The aptly named D-20 digital watch is designed specifically to cater to this niche but vibrant market, putting a unique hi-tech spin on a common analog tool. Instead of throwing a die, you push buttons, but the advantage is that you can “fit” as many dice as you need. Despite its name, this digital watch actually supports d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20 rolls. It can even roll a d100 or 12 dice all at once.

While the watch is clearly designed for tabletop RPG gamers, especially with its “fun animation” while virtually rolling the die, it is also a decent digital wristwatch. It has a perpetual calendar, a 12/24 hour mode switch, and an amber backlight. What it doesn’t have, amusingly enough, is an alarm or even a stopwatch function, which the designers deem to be the antithesis of fun.

In terms of aesthetics, the D-20 watch is pretty retro, bearing an octagonal body typical of digital watches of the past. That body is made from stainless steel or fiber-reinforced PBT resin, and while the black and silver colorways are pretty conventional, the bright orange model is quite the head-turner. The D-20 is definitely a niche design, but one that straddles the fine line between a plain digital watch and one with too many smarts.

Remember the time when smartphone and app designers scrambled to make sure that icons and user interfaces resembled real-world objects as closely as possible? This was the age of the first iPhone and practically most iconography and UI launched during those years. The design language offered familiar faces at a time when new devices and experiences felt alien and even daunting.

Of course, minimalism is the battle cry in design these days, even when it comes to user interfaces. That doesn’t mean one can’t miss the sometimes cute and often quirky precepts of skeuomorphism. In an interesting twist of fate, these wallets turn that design trend on its head to bring literally iconic folders from the computer screen to your pocket.

Skeuomorphic design brought physical objects into the digital realm, or at least their simplified representations. The idea was to carry over some of the intuitiveness of real-world things into an unfamiliar experience, though that only worked in the beginning. Icon and UI designs now espouse flat, minimalist, and completely virtual aesthetics, though they still retain the basic form of the object they represent.

These rather adorable wallets come full circle by bringing those digital objects into the real world, specifically, the folders used to hold files in computers. On the one hand, it pays homage to the age of skeumorphic design that aimed to bridge the gap between the two worlds. On the other hand, it’s the complete opposite of skeuomorphism not in terms of aesthetics but in the direction of digital to physical.

Made from vegan leather, these wallets also carry a bit of computing history to them. The PC Folder Wallet, for example, is similar to the icon theme used in the Windows XP era, while the New Folder Wallet is closer to the current Windows 11. There’s also an “Untitled Folder Wallet” that will be familiar to macOS users. All three wallets come in boxes that match the operating system they were inspired from.

The wallets themselves only have two pockets and are pretty slim and minimal. Depending on your actual needs, they might be a bit too limited. That said, these designs are really more for show, with some practical use included. Definitely a collector’s item or gift idea, especially for those who have a fondness for computers and history.
