Tiny House Listings recently unveiled a new towable dwelling called the Lad. It is perfect for those seeking low-budget downsizing options that are comfortable and cozy. The Lad features a practical and compact interior that can happily house two people. The Lad is an updated version of one of the firm’s previous models, and it is based on a double-axle trailer. It features a length of 20 feet and is the same size as most European tiny homes. The exterior includes painted metal and is topped off with a metal roof.

Designer: Tiny House Listings

The interior of the house occupies around 160 square feet, and it features a finishing in ply. An open layout has been placed on one floor, with the entrance leading to a compact living area that includes a sofa and space for a TV. A storage unit has been integrated as well. The kitchen is closely located, and it isn’t fully featured.

But it does include a countertop, a sink and an electric stove, a fridge/freezer, and an area for appliances and extra storage. The bathroom is also placed nearby, and you can access it via a sliding door. It contains a flushing toilet, a shower, and a small sink.

The tiny home only includes one bedroom, and since it is on the ground floor, it includes plenty of headroom to stand upright. The bedroom includes a double bed with integrated storage, as well as a mini-split air-conditioner, which will heat and cool the entire home. Enough though the bedroom isn’t the largest, the fact that you can stand upright, unlike most bedrooms in other tiny homes is a plus point.

The Lad isn’t the best option if you’re looking for a spacious and roomy tiny home. But if you’re a couple or a small family, then the Lad could be a good fit for you. It includes all the basic amenities, as well as a sense of comfort and coziness that other modern homes often miss out on. Currently, the Lad is priced at US$47,500.

Transforming furniture turns an office space into a skating park

]]>

There’s that saying that all work and no play makes people dull, but work environments rarely encourage the two to mix in the same space. Unless, of course, you’re actually working in an industry that makes games, toys, and sports equipment. Even then, however, those would probably still be considered “work, and the line that divides work and play still exists.

But what if the very same office space could become your playground during lunch break? And what if you didn’t have to move the furniture out of the way to do that? That’s sort of the magic offered by this unique office furniture collection design by skaters for skaters, transforming an already dynamic open floor plan office into a field for exercise and play when you need to get the creative juices flowing again.

Designer: Zenga Bros

Traditional wisdom dictates that work life and personal life should be kept separate but balanced, but younger generations have found ways to blend the two together and still be productive. That’s easier when your passion and hobby are actually part of your work, like when you’re a couple of designers who happen to love skateboarding as well. Skate Break is the result of that convergence, transforming one space into another without breaking too much of a sweat.

Just like a hi-tech showroom or a sci-fi transforming room, Skate Break’s furniture stands as honest-to-goodness functional office equipment one moment and skate ramps the next. As long as you have ample room between these pieces of furniture, you don’t even have to move them out of the way and bring them back in after you’re done. It’s not instantaneous, of course, but it sure beats having to constantly move things around whenever you want to switch from one mode to another.

There’s definitely some ingenious design involved, like a boardroom table that can be taken apart to become a pyramid ramp and a grind ledge. The standing desk uses a lever system to reveal a hidden ramp on which to skate. Don’t worry, the large computer screen is protected by transparent plexiglass, so you can confidently skate up and down over it.

The oversized Lamp Ramp is probably one of the more striking pieces, composed of what looks like a gigantic flower-shaped fanning shade and an arched stand. When a pin and the counterweight dumbbell are removed, the shade moves down until it touches the floor, creating a small volcano ramp and rainbow rail.

Skating inside the office might not be the smartest decision, especially if you don’t have protective gear available. It’s still a fun idea to turn an office into a playground and back again, seamlessly shifting gears as the need or desire arises. And as many companies with high creative output have proven, such a lifestyle can actually be beneficial to both employees and employers, as long as they don’t get into accidents.

Canada-based Rover Tiny Homes’ latest Cypress model was downsized quite interestingly. It isn’t mounted on a trailer, which makes it not very portable, but quite spacious with a roomy interior that is apt for a family. The Cypress is intended to be installed on permanent foundations, so it isn’t a towable option if you’re seeking one. It features a length of 44 feet, making it one of the bigger models on the market, and a width of 12 feet.

Designer: Rover Tiny Homes

The home features a finishing in metal siding paired with cedar trim and generous glazing, which allows the interior to fill with natural light. You can enter the living room through double glass doors. The living room is spacious and open and features a tongue-and-groove pine ceiling. It also includes some trim made from 100-year-old reclaimed barn wood, a sofa, chairs, and small tables. The kitchen is closely located, including a breakfast bar for three people, an oven with a four-burner stove, a microwave, a dishwasher, cabinetry, and a sink. A second entrance is included in the kitchen as well.

The bathroom is located near the kitchen, and it includes a bathtub/shower, which isn’t usually seen in most tiny homes. It also hosts a vanity sink, a flushing toilet, a stacked washing machine, and a dryer as well. The tiny home is equipped with one downstairs bedroom, which has plenty of headroom to stand upright.

There are stairs located next to the bathroom which offer access to another bedroom. Even though the bedroom is upstairs, it has ample amount of headroom to stand straight. There is another bedroom on the upper story, but like most tiny home bedrooms, this one has a low ceiling. This tiny home is relatively spacious, truly testing the boundaries of what a micro-home is. It is larger than most tiny homes on the market, but it serves as a comfortable and excellent option for larger families who may not be able to fit in the truly tiny houses. The Cypress is priced at US$143,000.

European tiny homes may not be as large and extravagant as their North American counterparts, but they do tend to be more detailed and impressive. Since the towing laws in Europe are stricter, they tend to be more compact and lightweight. Designed by Baluchon, Leïla’s Tiny House is a comfortable and cozy home featuring a length of 20 feet. It is a lovely light-filled space that is ideal for two people.

Designer: Baluchon

The tiny home is based on a double-axle trailer and features a finishing in red cedar, topped with a metal roof. It has a compact size, amped with generous glazing. The interior of the home is finished in spruce, and hints of Moroccan-inspired color have been added to the home, integrating an interesting vibe. The inside feels warm and inviting. The vibrant colors create an environment that also feels lively, forming a positive aura.

The home features one entrance that leads you to the kitchen. It is quite spacious for a tiny French home, with a simple yet well-equipped interior. The home includes an oven, a two-burner propane-powered stove, a sink, a small fridge and freezer, cabinetry, and a breakfast bar for two. The living room is closely located, and it includes a large window as well as a small wood-burning stove for warmth. A big daybed with integrated storage is included as well, and it can be used as a sofa and guest bed.

The opposite end of the house hosts the bathroom. It can be accessed through a sliding door, and it is equipped with a toilet and shower, but no sink. This isn’t hygienic and is pretty inconvenient if we’re honest. Residents will have to wash their hands in the kitchen. The home only includes one bedroom, and it can be accessed by a wooden ladder. The bedroom is like most bedrooms found in tiny homes, with a low ceiling, a double bed, and shelving. Leïla’s Tiny Home is priced at US$90,000.

]]>

OODA recently unveiled the Hora Verticale in Tirana, Albania, and they are back with another banger – Ndarja. Ndarja is a square, high-rise building that will be located in central Tirana. It measures around 355,000 sq ft and will span over 22 floors. The word Ndarja roughly translates to split or separation in Albanian, which does the building justice, since it will be pulled apart to create two visually intriguing towers.

One tower will accommodate office spaces on the lower floors and luxurious residences on the upper floors. The second tower will contain a retail space downstairs and a hotel on the upper stories.

Designer: OODA

The exterior is quite fascinating, and it will be covered with different plants and trees. The vegetation selected will be tough enough to handle the wind and sunlight while offering shade to the residents. The exterior will also include perforated metal sheeting to regulate the sunlight. The ground level will host a square with a reflective pool and more greenery. This space will be integrated between both towers.

“A transparent water mirror serves as a portal at its core, drawing natural light underground and linking the exterior to the interior,” said OODA. “This open area integrates the greenery from the surrounding streets, the square, and the balcony gardens, creating a pleasant microclimate for the neighborhood. The square, no longer just a passageway, becomes a true urban oasis.”

The facade is earthy-toned, allowing the structure to blend seamlessly with the city. The metal sheets reflect the balconies into the city, thereby mirroring the urban environment and creating an interaction that binds the inside and the surroundings. This forms a harmonious connection between the interior environment and the urban environment.

The incredible project is currently in the licensing phase, and Ndarja is expected to be constructed in 2029. This impressive project is a part of a large construction effort in Tirana which includes multiple other impressive buildings such as the Bond Tower and Klan TV HQ by OODA, and other structures by BIG and MVRDV.

Designed by Network of Architecture and Atelier4, this mixed-use high-rise in Tirana, Albania, is a 71-meter-tall structure called the Puzzle Tirana Tower. It is made up of house-shaped blocks that protrude out quirkily from the facades. It is designed to be a vertical village and will include 32,700 square meters of commercial space, penthouses, apartments, and a hotel. It is currently a concept, but once constructed will include stacked volumes that mimic the shape of  “the archetypal village house with a gabled roof”.

Designer: Network of Architecture and Atelier4

The house-shaped blocks will project from the facade, maintaining distances between 0.5 and three meters. They will be built in different colors, orientations, and forms, showcasing varied layouts. They are essentially puzzle pieces that will seamlessly and gracefully “click into the structure”.

“The concept of the project comes from the fusion and densification of two worlds: urban and rural, into a single architectural intervention,” said studio founder Lukas Rungger. “The proposal celebrates the concept of abstracted puzzle pieces, always different but still similar, through its varying orientations the fragments collectively shape the facade, interweave with each other and create a common built collage.”

The tower will be incorporated with local plants and shrubs forming surreal hanging gardens, loggias, and extra space for residents. A big house-shaped void will be included, to make it look like “the missing piece of the puzzle”. This will be carved in the center of the tower and will accommodate cantilevered balconies.

“The puzzles work as value-added spaces for each housing unit,” Rungger said. “Depending on the individual needs of the inhabitants, it can transform into a loggia, an open-air cinema, a relaxation zone, a playground, a fireplace and many more versatile functions.”

The first two floors will include the building’s commercial spaces. This can be accessed through a triangular entrance at the ground level. The tower will include multiple sculptural elements, as well as a central foyer. The foyer will contain staircases that offer access to the upper floors. The basement levels will accommodate a multi-level underground car park. The second to the sixth floor will host a hotel, as well as apartment units. The seventh to the sixteenth floors will include apartments only.

]]>

This week, Google unveiled its first mass timber office building in Sunnyvale, California. It is designed to be a cutting-edge and eco-friendly building that will serve as a productive and conducive workspace for the employees. It was designed, keeping in mind the needs and requirements of the environment and employees. It is a five-story structure that will have 96% less carbon emissions than a traditional steel and concrete building of the same size.

“This building, 1265 Borregas, showcases creating sustainable buildings that empower people to do their best work,” said Michelle Kaufmann, Google’s director of R+D for the Built Environment and the guiding force behind the creation of the new workspace in Sunnyvale’s Moffett Park district.

Designer: Google

As mentioned, it is the first building to be constructed from mass timber, which is a new type of engineered wood. Small pieces of wood are layered and laminated together to build large beams and walls. The office is designed to create an environment of collaboration, support, and focus. It is equipped with neighborhood spaces that will facilitate hybrid connections and interesting collaborations.

It is a representation of Google’s priority to build nature-based or biophilic workplaces. According to research, people work best when surrounded by nature, and with this new workspace, Google is hoping to create a fresh and inspiring work environment. Timber is exposed inside and outside the office, which allows natural light to stream in while offering splendid views of the Northern California landscape. Automatic wooden blinds have been integrated, and they adapt to the sun’s position, minimizing glare.

Mass timber is blessed with regenerative qualities, as it can absorb and store carbon over time. Hence, choosing mass timber was a sustainable and eco-friendly decision made by Google. It also reduces carbon emissions that are emitted from the extraction, production, and transportation of traditional building materials. Additionally, 100% of the structural mass timber lumber used to build 1265 Borregas was sourced from responsibly managed forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Around three acres of pollinator-friendly native plants, such as coast live oak, California wild rose, and common milkweed,d were planted at the site and its neighboring sites. This further encourages the creation of an office building and site that is sustainable and efficient. The widespread presence of greenery helps to improve employee wellbeing, ensuring they focus and work better.

Movable trolley cabinet lets you be more mobile in your work space

Whether you’re working from home or from your office, you probably have just one desk or workspace where you spend most of your time. But there are also those that for one reason or another love to move around the room when working. It can be a hassle to keep moving your stuff when you need to move from one place or another. This product concept might just be the solution if you have that problem.

Designers: Keetae Kim, Jinsu Du, Young Jin Kim

Kimmipak (named after the three designers) is a concept for a steel trolley that you can help move around the stuff that you need to work on if you’re moving from one place to another in the room. It looks like a piece of luggage except that it opens up like a cabinet. But just like your luggage, it is something that you can store things in and then roll around if you need to bring stuff to and from your other workspaces.

When you open the cabinet, there are two layers but it can probably be modified as well if you need more shelves. You can ise it as a bookshelf, cabinet, and the top can also be a mini table. There is a removable toolbox at the top where you can place items like garden supplies, tools, beauty stuff, etc, if you need them carried around but you don’t need the whole trolley.

It’s an interesting concept for those who move around a lot in the room and you need your tools or stuff with you. Some steel or filing cabinets also have wheels for easier moving around if needed but this one was specifically designed to be portable and movable like your luggage.

I swear by my laptop stand for two simple reasons. The first is that it elevates my laptop so I can look at the screen without straining my neck. The second is that it allows my laptop to occupy less space on my desk, accommodating for the large ergonomic keyboard I have. Broadly, laptop stands have done just these two things – elevating and space-conserving. The CASA Hub Stand Ultra does some more.

Aside from elevating and angle-adjusting your laptop (or tablet), this stand gives you a dedicated mount for your phone, has a 360° swivel joint for adjusting your gadgets even more, and packs the ultimate accessory – a USB-C multiport hub to give your laptop, tablet, and phone access to extra ports like USB-A, HDMI, and even ethernet.

Crafted by ADAM elements and a winner of the 2024 Red Dot Design Award, this laptop stand and hub doubles as a complete workstation upgrade, reshaping how we organize our devices. Built from durable aluminum, the stand’s perforated plate naturally keeps devices cool, optimizing performance even during intensive work sessions. With an impressive weight capacity of 13.2 lbs (6kg), it handles laptops up to 17 inches comfortably. The stability and strength built into this stand means users can rely on it without constant micro-adjustments.

The stand comes with a telescopic arm that elevates your device, and an angle-adjusting friction hinge that lets you set it at any angle you want, but where it differs from most $40-50 stands is the inclusion of a smooth, 360-degree rotating base that lets you face your device anywhere. The adjustable arm ranges from 2.1 to 16.5 inches, elevating your device over 1 foot for better visibility too, allowing you to turn your regular work setup into a standing one, should you choose. For shared workspaces, the rotation feature allows easy screen sharing, adding functionality where traditional stands can’t compete.

Swivel the MagSafe phone stand out, and you’ve got a laptop stand that holds your phone too. The folks at ADAM elements call it their Intelligent Magnetic System (iMS), which also comes baked into the laptop stand part itself, allowing you to safely and securely mount a laptop or tablet on the main stand, and a MagSafe-friendly phone on the swivel-out side stand. Of course, you don’t have to necessarily use Apple devices with the CASA Hub Stand Ultra – a protective lip on the bottom of the stand holds any laptop or tablet, preventing it from falling. For phones, a simple MagSafe sticker easily makes it mount-compatible.

The CASA Hub Stand Ultra’s pièce de résistance, however, is the snap-on multiport hub that gives your device a connectivity boost. The hub’s an add-on that you can either use with the stand, or use independently, making it pretty flexible depending on how you work. This modular hub offers USB-C Power Delivery, HDMI up to 4K at 60Hz, USB-A, and even an RJ-45 Ethernet port. Designed to serve multiple needs at once, the hub handles data transfer, high-resolution video output, and device charging. It’s detachable and magnetic too, which means it can snap onto the stand as well as onto any other magnetic surface like the side of your desk.

The stand’s minimal design makes it a worthy add to your WFH or WFO setup. It’s all-metal, with perforations and cutouts that not only help cut weight but also help with heat dissipation, allowing air to naturally circulate around your laptop, preventing overheating even during long, demanding sessions. And with silicone pads lining the base, the stand won’t slip or scratch your desk surface, allowing you to adjust or reposition it without fear of damage or instability.

Despite all the functionality, the stand still remains fairly compact and lightweight, measuring a mere 53mm (a little over 2 inches) when folded down, and weighing 3.4 lbs or roughly as much as your average laptop. The CASA Hub Stand Ultra secured a Red Dot Design Award for its balance of form and functionality, while also holding the unique distinction of being the only stand we’ve seen that packs its own detachable USB-C multiport hub, and has the ability to adjust your laptop’s height to over 16 inches. Perfect for people looking to reduce desk clutter, or people wanting to dabble with standing work setups, the CASA Hub Stand Ultra starts at $172.57, and comes in silver and space-grey, letting you choose a stand to match your laptop or tablet perfectly!
