Christmas is less than a month away, and we’re seeing an influx of creative and passionate designs. Designer Anna Lomax recently unveiled the All Lit Up! glowing Christmas tree-inspired sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum’s South Kensington Grand Entrance. The sculpture draws inspiration from the museum’s entryway columns, and it stands tall as an interesting spiraling column that adopts the form of a traditional Christmas tree.

Designer: Anna Lomax

The installation is whimsical and playful and was created to “evoke the feelings of joy and child-like wonder” and embody the vibrant Christmas spirit. It takes the traditional Christmas tree and adds an amusing and contemporary twist to it, creating something that instantly sparks wonder and curiosity. A rounded metallic plinth serves as the base of the installation, and it is surrounded by four large columns. The base rises upwards in a fascinating spiral, serving as a lovely decorative design illuminated by LED lights.

“My design for the 2025 V&A Christmas Tree uses the iconic V&A dome columns as a starting point but gives them an actual playful twist, embodying the ‘Christmas Spirit’ through a spectacle of light,” Lomax said.

The installation creates a subtle connection between trees and columns, attempting to “unify the elegance of a tree with the strength of a column”, the museum added. The result is something refreshing and yet traditional. You are reminded of a comforting Christmas tree when you look at the installation, but you also feel curiosity as you observe its fresh new form.

“Lighting up and lifting spirits this festive season, we are thrilled to commission Anna Lomax for this year’s V&A Christmas tree installation,” senior curator Meneesha Kellay said. “Delighting visitors with her playful site-specific response, Anna has taken inspiration from the iconic columns in our Grand Entrance.”

This mesmerizing installation is a part of the museum’s annual Christmas installations, and it will remain on display till January 5th, 2025. If you want to get into some early festive cheer with a twist, then we would recommend a quick visit to the V&A Museum, if you have the time.

Why This Stylish Modular Sofa Is a Must-Have for Small Spaces and Small Pets

Picture your ideal couch setup. Maybe it’s a cozy corner where you can curl up with a book, or perhaps it’s a spacious centerpiece for gatherings with friends. This modular beauty adapts to both scenarios effortlessly. Designed with modular cushioned blocks that can be rearranged at will, it molds itself to your space and needs. But it doesn’t stop there. Tucked into the armrests, like a delightful secret waiting to be discovered, are wooden cubbies that cater to two audiences: the human and the feline. Yes, your cat is going to have opinions about this couch—and for once, they’ll be good ones.

Let’s start with the pet-friendly design because, frankly, it’s genius. Cats love small spaces; it’s a quirk of their nature. Those armrest cubbies are the equivalent of feline paradise. They’re just the right size for hiding, lounging, or staging an ambush on an unsuspecting houseplant. What’s particularly appealing is how these cubbies feel purposeful. They’re not awkward afterthoughts stapled onto an otherwise sleek design. Instead, their smooth wooden curves and built-in placement make them look entirely intentional. You almost imagine the designers grinning as they realized they’d just solved two problems at once: clutter and cat contentment.

Designer: Sunriu

For you—the human in this relationship—the cubbies offer a place to stash books, magazines, or even a trailing pothos plant that adds a bit of greenery to your space. If you’ve ever been frustrated by couches that hog space without offering storage, this feature alone feels like a small victory. But what really stands out is how the sofa balances practicality with an understated elegance. The wood grain of the cubbies contrasts gently with the soft, fabric upholstery, creating a look that feels modern without veering into cold minimalism. It’s warm and welcoming, the kind of design that makes you want to sit down and stay awhile.

But a sofa isn’t just about looking good—it has to feel good too. Luckily, this one has comfort baked into its DNA. The cushions are plush yet supportive, and the modular nature of the design means you can expand or rearrange the setup as needed. Hosting friends? Stretch it out into a long sectional. Feeling introspective? Shrink it down to a snug reading nook. The flexibility makes it an excellent fit for spaces of all sizes, from compact apartments to sprawling living rooms.

Then there’s the visual appeal. Some modular sofas tend to look, well, modular. They can feel boxy or industrial, like something you’d see in a coworking space rather than a home. This one avoids that trap entirely. The soft curves of the armrests and the way the cubbies integrate into the design make it feel like a cohesive piece, not a collection of parts. It’s the kind of sofa that effortlessly blends into any aesthetic, whether your home leans toward Scandinavian chic or mid-century modern.

And while it’s clearly designed with cats in mind, it’s not exclusive to them. Small dogs, rabbits, or any curious tiny pet would likely find those cubbies just as inviting. It’s rare to see furniture that accommodates so many lifestyles without compromising its core design, but this sofa pulls it off. It’s as if the designers anticipated all the little moments—your cat peeking out from its new hideaway, a stack of well-thumbed books within arm’s reach, or the way the light catches on the wooden edges during golden hour.

Products for cat owners have become such a hit these past years. Previously, it was just mostly for dogs but now cat parents also have a lot of options to choose from. Cat towers are popular in particular especially for those who live in areas where their fur babies don’t have outdoor areas to play around in. While you can buy those that are already assembled or can be easily assembled, it would also be nice to have something more flexible.

Designer: Lin Seongmin

This is the idea behind the Petterior stacking cat tower concept. It’s a modular design that can fit the personality of their cat and the owners’ design preferences as well. It also is able to become a space for your playful cat to enjoy their freedom even though your living area may be a bit limited.

The set has different elements that can be put together including various flat surfaces, round, or rather oblong shaped beds, and various connectors and screws. You can assemble and disassemble these on your own according to your preference. It should also probably come in various colors to also match the color and aesthetic the cat owner is going for.

The fact that it’s modular also means that in case some of the parts get lost or broken, you need to only replace those parts or you can buy other parts to make the cat tower different. It’s a concept that cat lovers will probably embrace especially the ones that want to have their pet accessories still match their space’s look while at the same time giving their pets the fun and freedom.

]]>

We’ve thankfully become more aware of the quality of our waters, especially with the increase of pollution or drastic changes in the chemical composition of rivers, lakes, and seas. We now have sophisticated equipment and software to monitor such properties, but it might come as a surprise that Mother Nature has her own way of detecting abnormalities in water. Clams, known as nature’s filter feeders, immediately react to sudden changes in water quality, sometimes even faster than scientific equipment.

Taking inspiration from one of nature’s wonder workers, this art installation turns water quality from an incorporeal idea into a tangible representation. Rather than just clamming up, these kinetic sculptures create an eerie melody, as if giving voice to the pain and woes of the water. It creates a surreal yet beautiful manifestation of water quality in a way that you can see and hear beyond just figures and graphs.

Designer: Marco Barotti

Clams aren’t able to filter out toxins (which they turn into pearls), so they would immediately shut close when they detect pollution in the water. Their reaction is sometimes faster than sensors and computers that still have to analyze the data from water samples, though, of course, they won’t be as accurate or specific. This interesting behavior, however, became the inspiration for this kinetic sculpture that, rather than just detecting water quality, translates the data into something just as interesting.

“Clams” is a collection of, well, translucent clam-like objects that have speakers inside. The clams are connected to a sensor that tests the quality of the water in the only way that humans can. Changes in the water quality are translated into sounds that shift over time, creating the semblance of eerie music. The vibrations from the speaker also cause the clamshell to go up and down, making it look like the clams are singing.

The shells themselves are made from recycled waste plastic, adding to the sustainability message of the sculptures. Although the shape of these man-made clams is quite simple, the otherworldly soundscape it produces is quite unique and memorable. It also creates an interesting bridge between media art, data sonification, and environmental awareness, translating intangible concepts and figures into something humans can better appreciate and understand.

]]>

At the last Euroluce show in Milan, the Liiu lamp by Vantot, edited by Luceplan, captured attention for its striking design. Liiu is a suspended structure with thin conductive wires that support small LED lamps. These lamps are held in place by springs that adjust their height, giving the entire piece a clean, minimalist appearance. It has since been recognized as an iconic piece, praised for its distinctive and innovative design.

Designer: Vantot, edited by Luceplan

Creating an iconic lamp is no small feat in the saturated market, and Liiu has managed to achieve this status by balancing aesthetics with functionality. Its design is both decorative and functional, drawing interest with its unique form and construction. The lamp’s instantly recognizable structure, coupled with its innovative use of conductive materials, sets it apart from more traditional lighting designs.

Vantot, known for its boundary-pushing approach to lighting design, avoids conventional methods in favor of more experimental techniques. The studio’s portfolio reflects this innovative spirit, with each lamp designed around the way light behaves and interacts with its environment, rather than merely focusing on creating a beautiful lampshade. The complexity of lighting design goes beyond what is typically considered in other design objects, requiring careful attention to both the construction and the behavior of light.

Two of Vantot’s other notable designs, the V-V-V and O-O-O lamps, exemplify the studio’s approach. The V-V-V lamp features a thin metal structure suspended by wires that also conduct electricity. This eliminates the need for traditional power cords, creating a sleek and modern design that serves both decorative and functional purposes. Its fishbone-shaped metal frame holds three LED lights, which diffuse light horizontally, making it an art piece as much as a lighting fixture.

On the other hand, the O-O-O lamp provides a different kind of lighting experience. While it uses similar conductive materials, its design is intended to provide subtle, ambient lighting. The glass lampshade directs light vertically, diffusing it gently throughout the room. The modular construction allows for customization in both the size and frequency of the lighting elements, making it adaptable to various spaces and user preferences.

Both lamps, along with Liiu, illustrate how Vantot explores new possibilities in lighting design, leveraging contemporary LED technology. LEDs operate at much lower voltages than traditional lighting, allowing for more creative flexibility in how electricity is conducted through the structure. This opens up new ways of integrating lighting into interior spaces safely, without the need for bulky or dangerous power cords.

The Liiu lamp, in particular, stands out for its elegant simplicity, combining function and form in a seamless design. Vantot’s attention to detail ensures that every element of the lamp, from its height-adjusting springs to the conductive wires, is carefully considered and tested. The studio’s approach to research and development means that each product undergoes extensive testing and refinement before reaching the market, ensuring that both aesthetics and performance are optimized.

In addition to their individual products, Vantot also creates large-scale lighting installations that showcase the full potential of their designs. These installations are often sculptural in nature, blending art with functional lighting in a way that enhances the surrounding environment. The Liiu lamp itself originated as one such installation before being adapted for commercial production.

Vantot’s work highlights the importance of innovation in lighting design, focusing on how light is emitted and managed rather than simply how the lamp looks. With Liiu, V-V-V, O-O-O, and other designs, the studio demonstrates that lighting can be more than just a source of illumination—it can be an emotional and immersive experience, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in contemporary design.

For the 2024 edition of Art Basel Paris, which took place from October 18th to October 20th, Louis Vuitton celebrated Frank Gehry and his incredible works. They displayed his massive white fish lamp and other creations inside the Grand Palais. Frank Gehry and Louis Vuitton have collaborated for over 20 years together. Gehry was the brains of the architectural wonder, the Maison Louis Vuitton Seoul, which showcases a stunning glass-covered exterior and fluid lines. Gehry also made a collection of stoppers for the Les Extraits perfume bottles in 2021, and in 2023, Vuitton displayed Gehry’s debut collection of handbags at Art Basel Miami. So it is no surprise, that the brand decided to embellish the Balcon d’Honneur with his lighting design. A wooden arch that Gehry displayed at Gagosian New York is placed around the monumental fish lamp. The arc is built from slats placed in geometric patterns.

Designer: Louis Vuitton x Frank Gehry

The white fish lamp isn’t the only work by Gehry that has been displayed. The lamp is teamed up with many of his collaborations with Louis Vuitton, including the aforementioned handbag range from Art Basel Miami. These beautiful bags are protected by glass, giving visitors a clear and concise vision of them. The bags draw inspiration from the architect’s style and design philosophy, which is marked by flowing lines and ballooned shapes.

The Capucines Mini Blossom and Mini Puzzle bag have been displayed, and other bags such as the Capucines MM Concrete Pockets BB Analog, and BB Shimmer Haze – bags that are inspired by architecture he has designed such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the IAC Building in New York City, and the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle.

Louis Vuitton’s Monogram canvas trunk is iconic, and Frank Gehry designed his version of it in 2014. The collection is called the Celebrating Monogram, and it was unveiled for the Maison’s 160th anniversary. The trunk is called the Twisted Box, and it truly does have a twist, it almost looks kind of deformed, yet appealing. Visitors will get an opportunity to glimpse this unique and iconic trunk design as well.

]]>

The Ventete aH-1 Cycle Helmet, awarded the prestigious Luminary Winner title at this year’s Red Dot Award: Design Concept, is an innovative take on personal safety for urban cyclists. At a time when cities are embracing cycling as a sustainable and efficient mode of transport, the aH-1 helmet emerges as a design-forward solution, combining portability, comfort, and protection in a way that challenges traditional helmet conventions.

What sets the aH-1 apart is its pneumatic design—a notable departure from the foam helmets that have dominated the market for over five decades. Instead of bulky, rigid foam, Ventete utilizes an inflatable air chamber system that collapses to a thickness of just 3.5 cm when deflated. This compact form allows the helmet to fit easily into a bag or even a large pocket, addressing a key pain point for cyclists who often struggle with where to store their helmets off the bike. When it’s time to ride, a small USB-C pump inflates the helmet in under 30 seconds, providing a quick and convenient transition from portability to protection.

Designer: Ventete Limited

Beyond the obvious convenience, this inflatable structure offers functional advantages. Ventete has engineered the aH-1 with a chambered design that significantly improves airflow around the rider’s head. Traditional foam helmets trap heat, often making them uncomfortable during longer rides or in warm weather. By contrast, the air-filled design of the aH-1 promotes natural ventilation, keeping the rider’s head cool. Testing conducted by the Swiss Federal Lab for Material Science (EMPA) confirmed that the helmet’s cooling performance matches that of riding bareheaded, a remarkable feat for a safety device.

While inflatable, the helmet is far from fragile or ineffective. It is fully certified to CE/UKCA standards (EN1078), meaning it meets stringent European and UK safety requirements. Extensive research at Imperial College London’s HeadLab revealed that the aH-1 offers superior protection, particularly against rotational impacts—a leading cause of brain injuries in cycling accidents. With over 15 global patents protecting its design, the aH-1 is a product of nearly a decade of research and development, marrying innovation with practical safety.

The design process, led by Ventete’s team of architects and engineers, was guided by a philosophy that integrates functionality with minimalism. The helmet’s understated aesthetic reflects a growing trend in urban mobility design, where products are expected to seamlessly fit into the user’s lifestyle. Its compact and foldable nature speaks to a more flexible, spontaneous approach to transportation. Produced in Switzerland, the aH-1 also embodies the precision and craftsmanship for which the country is known, ensuring that the helmet is as durable as it is stylish.

The aH-1’s innovative design aligns with the broader cultural shift towards sustainability and urban mobility. As more cities promote cycling as a key component of their transport infrastructure, there is an increasing demand for gear that is not only safe and functional but also adaptable to the fast-paced, space-conscious lives of urban dwellers. By addressing the limitations of traditional helmets, the aH-1 positions itself as a forward-thinking solution for the modern cyclist.
