Transforming furniture turns an office space into a skating park

There’s that saying that all work and no play makes people dull, but work environments rarely encourage the two to mix in the same space. Unless, of course, you’re actually working in an industry that makes games, toys, and sports equipment. Even then, however, those would probably still be considered “work, and the line that divides work and play still exists.

But what if the very same office space could become your playground during lunch break? And what if you didn’t have to move the furniture out of the way to do that? That’s sort of the magic offered by this unique office furniture collection design by skaters for skaters, transforming an already dynamic open floor plan office into a field for exercise and play when you need to get the creative juices flowing again.

Designer: Zenga Bros

Traditional wisdom dictates that work life and personal life should be kept separate but balanced, but younger generations have found ways to blend the two together and still be productive. That’s easier when your passion and hobby are actually part of your work, like when you’re a couple of designers who happen to love skateboarding as well. Skate Break is the result of that convergence, transforming one space into another without breaking too much of a sweat.

Just like a hi-tech showroom or a sci-fi transforming room, Skate Break’s furniture stands as honest-to-goodness functional office equipment one moment and skate ramps the next. As long as you have ample room between these pieces of furniture, you don’t even have to move them out of the way and bring them back in after you’re done. It’s not instantaneous, of course, but it sure beats having to constantly move things around whenever you want to switch from one mode to another.

There’s definitely some ingenious design involved, like a boardroom table that can be taken apart to become a pyramid ramp and a grind ledge. The standing desk uses a lever system to reveal a hidden ramp on which to skate. Don’t worry, the large computer screen is protected by transparent plexiglass, so you can confidently skate up and down over it.

The oversized Lamp Ramp is probably one of the more striking pieces, composed of what looks like a gigantic flower-shaped fanning shade and an arched stand. When a pin and the counterweight dumbbell are removed, the shade moves down until it touches the floor, creating a small volcano ramp and rainbow rail.

Skating inside the office might not be the smartest decision, especially if you don’t have protective gear available. It’s still a fun idea to turn an office into a playground and back again, seamlessly shifting gears as the need or desire arises. And as many companies with high creative output have proven, such a lifestyle can actually be beneficial to both employees and employers, as long as they don’t get into accidents.

Patterns are essential in interior design, adding depth and character to spaces. Incorporating patterns in furniture can enhance your decor by creating striking focal points, reflecting your style, and adding visual interest. Whether through bold statement pieces, unique textures, or distinct area definitions, patterned furniture allows you to infuse personality and sophistication into your home while complementing your existing style.

Recent trends in patterned furniture include geometric designs with a modern twist for a balanced look, floral patterns that evoke a vintage feel, and abstract patterns that add vibrant colors. Stripes maintain a timeless quality, contributing to a cozy atmosphere. Textures are elevated with tufting, embossing, and woven materials, which add depth and richness to the overall design.

1. Geometric Patterns

Geometric patterns in furniture design have become a hallmark of modern aesthetics, blending form and function seamlessly. These patterns, characterized by their use of shapes like triangles, circles, and hexagons, add visual interest and a sense of order to spaces. Designers often employ geometric motifs to create a contemporary look, utilizing clean lines and symmetrical forms that can complement various interior styles.

Beyond aesthetics, geometric patterns can also enhance the functionality of furniture, as they often incorporate modular elements that allow for flexibility and adaptability in different settings. This design approach not only elevates the visual appeal but also adds a layer of sophistication to any room.

The Designated Table collection showcases side tables with eye-catching geometric cutouts—circles, squares, and rectangles—that serve as design elements and practical storage compartments. These playful patterns add a whimsical touch while providing functional spaces for organizing items.

Available in various shapes like hexagons and half-circles, the tables feature legs that complement the geometric designs, seamlessly blending style with practicality.

2. Play with Form

Design form in furniture emphasizes the creation of pieces that harmoniously blend aesthetics with functionality. This approach focuses on the shape, structure, and overall silhouette of furniture, ensuring that each piece not only serves its intended purpose but also enhances the visual appeal of a space.

Designers often experiment with curves, angles, and proportions to craft innovative forms that can stand as artistic statements. The emphasis on form allows for the exploration of various materials and techniques, resulting in unique pieces that cater to diverse tastes and needs. Ultimately, form design in furniture seeks to create timeless and elegant pieces that resonate with users on both a practical and emotional level.

Bjarke Ballisager’s Together and Apart Table showcases a sculptural sawtooth cutout pattern in solid white oak. This innovative design serves as a versatile table and stands as a piece of art, seamlessly adapting to various heights and functions while adding a unique visual element to your home decor.

The sawtooth pattern also allows for an interactive element to be added to the table, amplifying its functionality. The result is a fun piece of modern furniture that easily becomes the focal point of any space.

3. Experiment With Color

Color plays a crucial role in furniture design, influencing mood, perception, and style. It can transform a space, making it feel vibrant and energetic or calm and soothing. Designers use color to create visual harmony, accentuate design features, and evoke specific emotions.

Along with this, color choices can affect the perceived size of a room, with lighter hues making spaces appear larger and darker tones adding warmth and coziness. Ultimately, color selection is vital in achieving a cohesive and appealing design.

The Alato Cabinet, designed by Pakawat Vijaykadga and Jumphol Socharoentham, students of furniture design in Thailand, features a captivating wave-like pattern that transitions through a gradient of cool colors on its front panel.

Inspired by the intricate arrangement of feathers, the designers employed an interlocking pattern to emulate the delicate gradient seen in a bird’s plumage.

The “Funky” furniture collection brings vibrant artistry to any space with its eclectic design and bold color palettes. The interplay of vivid hues creates captivating patterns and textures, making each piece a striking focal point. This versatile unit can serve as a storage solution or multi-purpose table, seamlessly blending artistic charm with practicality.

Available in three distinct color combinations, “Funky” enhances your home with dynamic patterns and a unique, conversation-starting presence.

4. Form Follows Function

The principle of “form follows function” in furniture design emphasizes practicality and purpose over aesthetics. This design philosophy ensures that a piece’s shape and appearance are dictated by its intended use, resulting in furniture that is both efficient and user-friendly.

By prioritizing functionality, designers create pieces that seamlessly integrate into everyday life, offering comfort and convenience. This approach leads to timeless designs that maintain their relevance and utility, balancing beauty with practicality.

Designed by João Teixeira, the Cloth coffee table blends Scandinavian and Japanese design elements to create a bold yet refined look. It features a curved bookstand as its centerpiece, the table not only enhances visual appeal but also offers practical functionality.

With its graceful curves and intricate details, the Cloth coffee table exemplifies the principle that form follows function, serving as a striking focal point and a versatile addition to any space.

5. Modern Meets Classic

In furniture design, the fusion of modern and classic styles creates a timeless aesthetic that appeals to diverse tastes. This approach combines sleek, contemporary lines with traditional elements, such as ornate carvings or rich wood finishes.

The result is a harmonious blend that respects historical design while embracing modern simplicity and functionality. By integrating the best of both worlds, this style offers versatility and sophistication, making it suitable for various interior settings.

Koen Boersma’s “A Different Turn” collection reimagines the ancient craft of woodturning with a contemporary flair. By using traditional tools, Boersma transforms rectangular wood blocks into unique furniture pieces with alternating round and square patterns.

Each design highlights the natural grain of the wood, creating intricate patterns that blend traditional techniques with modern aesthetics for truly one-of-a-kind forms.

6. Use Patterned Fabric

Patterned fabric in furniture design adds depth and character, transforming simple pieces into statement items. Designers use a variety of patterns, from florals to geometrics, to inject personality and style into furniture. These fabrics can highlight a piece’s structure and complement the overall decor theme.

Patterns can serve practical purposes, such as camouflaging wear and tear. Ultimately, the use of patterned fabric enhances visual interest and offers endless customization possibilities.

The Hanara-shi series, introduced by Paola Lenti and Nendo, is a striking collection inspired by Japanese cherry blossoms and samurai armor. This series features suspended lamps, baskets, floor lamps, armchairs, and poufs, each adorned with vibrant colors and intricate patterns.

Crafted from Maris mesh—a 100% recyclable polypropylene—the collection blends artistic design with sustainability, incorporating recovered cutoffs to enhance its eco-friendly credentials.

The Mondos collection by Laun and Chet Architecture features outdoor furniture that showcases a unique pattern created by tufting. Inspired by the dynamic waves of Mondos Beach, the tufted design adds texture and visual interest to the pieces.

This six-piece set, including a sofa, loveseat, side chair, chaise, side table, and coffee table mimics the fluid, curving forms of beach waves, enhancing comfort and style. The Mondos collection brings a distinctive, beach-inspired elegance to any outdoor space with its bold colors and textured patterns.

7. Beautify with Pop Furniture

Pop style in furniture design is characterized by its bold colors, playful shapes, and a sense of whimsy that draws inspiration from pop art and culture. This design style embraces unconventional materials and vibrant patterns, often incorporating elements of surprise and humor.

Pop style pieces serve as focal points in a room, bringing energy and a youthful vibe. By breaking traditional design rules, pop style encourages creativity and self-expression in home decor.

Flare by Draga & Aurel is a striking furniture collection that explores refraction with multicolored Lucite blocks. Handcrafted into tables and totems, each piece features bold geometric shapes and abstract patterns, creating a dynamic pop-futuristic look.

The layered acrylic produces a kaleidoscope effect that shifts with light, merging art with function for a vibrant touch in quirky, minimalist spaces.

8. Striped Patterns

Stripes in furniture design offer a versatile way to introduce rhythm and movement into a space. Whether bold or subtle, vertical or horizontal, stripes can elongate or widen the appearance of furniture, influencing the room’s perceived dimensions.

Designers often use stripes to add a touch of sophistication or a playful edge, depending on the color palette. This pattern can complement various styles, from modern to traditional, making it a popular choice for dynamic and engaging interiors.

With his Rumbler collection, Stockholm-based designer Lars Hofsjö reimagines traditional Swedish rag rugs into modern furniture. By selecting and wrapping repurposed rag rugs—known for their striped patterns—around aluminum shapes, Hofsjö creates unique, plush side tables that blend rustic charm with contemporary design.

Hofsjö’s work preserves Swedish heritage while introducing sustainable and innovative design.

The FIVE x SEVEN collection showcases tables by BUDDE using marble off-cuts. Each piece features striking linear patterns formed by the natural veining of seven different types of marble in earthy hues.

The precise lines of these tables highlight the stone’s inherent beauty, creating a sophisticated interplay of textures and colors that emphasizes the marble’s unique, linear characteristics.

9. Inlay Design

Inlay in furniture design involves embedding materials such as wood, metal, or mother-of-pearl into the surface of a piece, creating intricate patterns and designs. This technique adds a layer of elegance and craftsmanship, often transforming simple furniture into exquisite works of art.

Inlay can highlight specific features or create focal points, enhancing the overall aesthetic. By combining different textures and colors, inlay work introduces depth and sophistication, making each piece uniquely captivating.

The Jaipur Furniture Collection by Sonal Tuli transforms traditional craftsmanship into modern art, inspired by Jaipur’s vibrant heritage. Featuring pieces like the Jaipur sideboard, chandelier, mirror, and rug, the collection showcases exquisite inlay patterns using white marble and lapis lazuli.

Each handcrafted item highlights intricate stone inlay techniques that reflect Jaipur’s architectural beauty and cultural richness. Despite challenges, such as transitioning from blue pottery to marble, Tuli’s collection perfectly blends functionality with opulent design.

10. Tactile Patterns

Tactile patterns in furniture design focus on texture, inviting touch and enhancing sensory experiences. By incorporating materials like woven fabrics, embossed leathers, or carved wood, designers create surfaces that engage the senses and add dimension to a piece.

These patterns not only enrich the visual appeal but also offer comfort and warmth, making furniture more inviting. Tactile elements can complement various styles, from rustic to contemporary, adding a unique and personal touch to interiors.

The Tila Chair by Shepherd Studio features a tactile pattern created by 210 chrome-finished stainless steel spheres arranged on a tubular frame. This unique design not only provides a visually striking appearance but also offers an engaging tactile experience.

The spheres’ reflective surfaces and their arrangement create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, making the chair a conversation piece that transforms its environment through visual and tactile stimulation.

The Cocoon Chair by Miray Özlem ER combines innovative design with comfort, inspired by the butterfly’s transformative cocoon. Featuring a knitted seating area supported by a wooden frame, it wraps around the user, offering a warm, cozy embrace. Though sizable, its unique, flowing form creates a striking focal point while providing a snug, full-body resting spot.

The Cocoon Chair blends functionality, comfort, and aesthetics into a distinctive, immersive experience.
Patterned furniture trends are redefining interior design, adding a new dimension to home décor. With ongoing experimentation and innovation, these trends are here to stay, offering exciting opportunities to incorporate bold patterns and designs into your space.

Seats like chairs and benches have designs that immediately convey images of stability and reliability, often expressed in shapes that look solid, balanced, and strong. Looks can be deceiving, as they say, and it is often the materials and structures that give a chair those properties. A chair might look like a balloon that can pop any minute but is actually made of powder-coated metal instead.

This collection of backless benches and stools also gives that impression, appearing as thin, soft sheets of metal rolled like sheets of paper. Of course, they’re actually usable seating furniture despite their fragile appearances, giving any room a distinctive visual that develops a unique character over time.

Designer: Arabella Maza and Stephen Maginn (Archive For Space)

Paper is one of the most bendable and fragile solid materials that everyone is familiar with. Ancient papyrus scrolls are known to be brittle even when they were in use, and toilet paper is easily torn or even dissolved when wet. It’s definitely not something you’d want to sit on, yet rolls of paper are exactly the inspiration behind this collection of thin metal seats, teasing the mind whether to believe their eyes or their brains instead.

Named after the aluminum material used to construct these simple yet elegant forms, the “Alu” collection looks like scrolls unraveling and frozen in time. The two remaining rolled ends function as the solid feet that support the structure, while the wavy curves above welcome the bodies of people sitting on them. Given their extra-thin profile, one might be a bit reluctant to surrender themselves to the allure of the benches, yet that is also part of the charm and call to adventure that these unique seats give.

You can’t go more minimalist than a single sheet of metal bent, curved, and rolled to shape. There are no backrests, no armrests, no decorations – just a single unbroken surface with no other details to be seen. Its beauty comes from the gentle curves of the form itself, letting the mind wander and fill in the blanks to their own satisfaction.

At the same time, the Alu collection exudes a brutalist quality, both for the unfinished versions and even for brushed aluminum. These surfaces will develop their own unique patina over the course of their use, from the wear and tear of the environment to the natural oils from people’s hands and bodies. Unique not only in its design but also in its long-term narrative, the Alu benches and stools demonstrate how much you can pull out from a single sheet of material.

Why This Stylish Modular Sofa Is a Must-Have for Small Spaces and Small Pets https://www.yankodesign.com/2024/11/24/why-this-stylish-modular-sofa-is-a-must-have-for-small-spaces-and-small-pets/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=why-this-stylish-modular-sofa-is-a-must-have-for-small-spaces-and-small-pets Sun, 24 Nov 2024 23:30:27 +0000 https://www.yankodesign.com/?p=521404

Picture your ideal couch setup. Maybe it’s a cozy corner where you can curl up with a book, or perhaps it’s a spacious centerpiece for gatherings with friends. This modular beauty adapts to both scenarios effortlessly. Designed with modular cushioned blocks that can be rearranged at will, it molds itself to your space and needs. But it doesn’t stop there. Tucked into the armrests, like a delightful secret waiting to be discovered, are wooden cubbies that cater to two audiences: the human and the feline. Yes, your cat is going to have opinions about this couch—and for once, they’ll be good ones.

Let’s start with the pet-friendly design because, frankly, it’s genius. Cats love small spaces; it’s a quirk of their nature. Those armrest cubbies are the equivalent of feline paradise. They’re just the right size for hiding, lounging, or staging an ambush on an unsuspecting houseplant. What’s particularly appealing is how these cubbies feel purposeful. They’re not awkward afterthoughts stapled onto an otherwise sleek design. Instead, their smooth wooden curves and built-in placement make them look entirely intentional. You almost imagine the designers grinning as they realized they’d just solved two problems at once: clutter and cat contentment.

Designer: Sunriu

For you—the human in this relationship—the cubbies offer a place to stash books, magazines, or even a trailing pothos plant that adds a bit of greenery to your space. If you’ve ever been frustrated by couches that hog space without offering storage, this feature alone feels like a small victory. But what really stands out is how the sofa balances practicality with an understated elegance. The wood grain of the cubbies contrasts gently with the soft, fabric upholstery, creating a look that feels modern without veering into cold minimalism. It’s warm and welcoming, the kind of design that makes you want to sit down and stay awhile.

But a sofa isn’t just about looking good—it has to feel good too. Luckily, this one has comfort baked into its DNA. The cushions are plush yet supportive, and the modular nature of the design means you can expand or rearrange the setup as needed. Hosting friends? Stretch it out into a long sectional. Feeling introspective? Shrink it down to a snug reading nook. The flexibility makes it an excellent fit for spaces of all sizes, from compact apartments to sprawling living rooms.

Then there’s the visual appeal. Some modular sofas tend to look, well, modular. They can feel boxy or industrial, like something you’d see in a coworking space rather than a home. This one avoids that trap entirely. The soft curves of the armrests and the way the cubbies integrate into the design make it feel like a cohesive piece, not a collection of parts. It’s the kind of sofa that effortlessly blends into any aesthetic, whether your home leans toward Scandinavian chic or mid-century modern.

And while it’s clearly designed with cats in mind, it’s not exclusive to them. Small dogs, rabbits, or any curious tiny pet would likely find those cubbies just as inviting. It’s rare to see furniture that accommodates so many lifestyles without compromising its core design, but this sofa pulls it off. It’s as if the designers anticipated all the little moments—your cat peeking out from its new hideaway, a stack of well-thumbed books within arm’s reach, or the way the light catches on the wooden edges during golden hour.

Products for cat owners have become such a hit these past years. Previously, it was just mostly for dogs but now cat parents also have a lot of options to choose from. Cat towers are popular in particular especially for those who live in areas where their fur babies don’t have outdoor areas to play around in. While you can buy those that are already assembled or can be easily assembled, it would also be nice to have something more flexible.

Designer: Lin Seongmin

This is the idea behind the Petterior stacking cat tower concept. It’s a modular design that can fit the personality of their cat and the owners’ design preferences as well. It also is able to become a space for your playful cat to enjoy their freedom even though your living area may be a bit limited.

The set has different elements that can be put together including various flat surfaces, round, or rather oblong shaped beds, and various connectors and screws. You can assemble and disassemble these on your own according to your preference. It should also probably come in various colors to also match the color and aesthetic the cat owner is going for.

The fact that it’s modular also means that in case some of the parts get lost or broken, you need to only replace those parts or you can buy other parts to make the cat tower different. It’s a concept that cat lovers will probably embrace especially the ones that want to have their pet accessories still match their space’s look while at the same time giving their pets the fun and freedom.

3D-printed furniture is still not as common as regular furniture but we’re seeing a lot of movement when it comes to designs and concepts. Aside from the fact that it’s easy to adapt this in actual production, it can also be sustainable and eventually impactful. Most of these 3D-printing concepts try to create something that’s recyclable or made from recycled materials therefore making it more sustainable than regular furniture.

Designer: Ethan Solodukhin

The Revo Chair Concept, with Revo meaning “revolutionary”, is a collection of 3D-printed furniture and is powered by the PlastiVista Atelier program. The program actually encourages homes, schools, and communities to donate their plastic waste and those that can be used for 3D printing converted into filament. The collection includes the Revo Chair and the Stoool (yes that’s not a typo). They are made from 100% recycled plastic.

The Revo Chair uses a single-piece design and it can serve as both an actual chair but when used with a different orientation, it can also serve as storage. The photos show it’s a box-like storage although it’s not really shown how it can be turned into that although the surfaces can be something you can place objects on. The Stoool meanwhile just serves as a seat with its compact surface, although you can probably also use it as a side table if you want to.

The renders of these chairs reminds me of those small, plastic phone holders that you can get for cheap. The question of course for these 3D-printed chairs would be if they are durable enough and comfortable enough for people to sit in for a long period of time.

Tables come in a wide variety of designs ranging from the basic flat surface on a stand to elaborate sculptural objects. There is also a spectrum of colors and materials, like wood, plastic, metal, or glass. Given their permanent functions, you’re often forced to choose one of these permutations upon purchase and be stuck with them forever.

Fortunately, there are some creative ways to get around that with a simple play of color and materials. These cylindrical side tables might look simple in their forms, but their playful colors give life to the room. Putting one inside the other, however, creates an almost magical appearance that also looks good enough to lick, though we definitely don’t recommend it, no matter how tempting it might seem.

Designers: Kristýna Mikolášková, Tereza Drobná

In terms of function, the Candy Tables collection is pretty basic. It comes in two variations – a solid cylindrical side table and a slightly larger hollow cylinder with an open bottom. They can be used independently, leaving you with two tables, but they can also be nested inside each other if you need to save space.

The magic happens through their colors, using a simple principle we all learn in grade school art class. Mixing two colors together creates a third color, depending on the ratio. In this case, the taller cylinder made of glass lets the metallic table inside show just a little of its color, mixing the two to create a visual effect that almost looks like hard candy.

The collection is available in six smaller metal tables and six larger glass cylinders. You can mix and match them, provided you have more than one pair, to create different combinations as the need arises. Or you can also just nest tables with the same hues to really highlight the color. It still looks pretty either way.

Candy Tables combines simple shapes and color theory to create a very pleasing and interesting aesthetic. The design also cleverly offers the benefit of having two tables or a single one, depending on the need and situation. More importantly, the lively design brings joy into any space, be it residential or commercial, completely transforming the room without complicated and sophisticated gimmicks.

]]>

The realm of wooden furniture design has witnessed a resurgence of creativity, with designers pushing the boundaries of traditional forms to create pieces that are not only functional but also visually captivating. We have curated a collection of ten innovative wooden furniture designs, each with its unique story, craftsmanship, and purpose. From multifunctional shoe racks to modular bookshelves, these pieces are a testament to the enduring allure of wood as a medium for artistic expression and practical utility.

These innovative wooden furniture designs showcase the limitless possibilities of combining functionality with artistic expression. Each piece offers a unique perspective on the role of furniture in our lives, challenging traditional norms and inviting users to engage with their surroundings in new and exciting ways.

1. Flow Wall Desk

The Flow Wall Desk is one of my favorite wooden furniture designs out there. Not only does it showcase a brilliant usage of wood, but it also features a fascinating space-saving form. It is a unique and creatively designed desk that combines functionality with visual appeal. The desk is a nifty wall-mounted design that folds and unfolds, depending on your need or requirement for the desk. When you unfold the desk, it converts into a neat workspace.

When unfolded it resembles a “spiraling caterpillar”, amping up its aesthetic appeal. When folded, the desk resembles a piece of geometric artwork, ensuring it doesn’t look like a boring old piece of furniture. The desk showcases clean lines, geometric shapes, and meticulous attention to detail.

Why is it noteworthy?

The desk is made from wood, thereby sealing the deal on its eco-friendly nature. Its unique design ensures it will occupy minimum space in your home, which is a boon, especially if you have space constraints. Even though it doesn’t take up much space, it does provide quite a bit of functionality.

The versatility of this solution is what makes it a best seller – especially in an era where the offices are calling workers back to office – the Flow Desk can be just folded and kept away until needed. The Flow Wall Desk is the perfect culmination of functionality, practicality, aesthetics, and craftsmanship, making for a wonderful addition to your modern home.

What we like

  • Blessed with a flatpack form that can be folded and unfolded when needed.
  • Not just functional, but also a decorative and aesthetic piece.

What we dislike

  • Folding and unfolding the desk whenever you need to use it means you don’t have access to a constant setup.

2. Vista Coffee Table

Named the Vista coffee table, this mesmerizing furniture piece is a lovely tribute to the natural beauty of the Rock of Gibraltar. It is crafted from layers of rosewood panels, showcasing stunning detailing. The design mimics the topographic contours of the iconic mountain, forming a visually striking piece. It features a layered assembly held together by wooden sticks, which creates visible gaps.

These gaps add an artistic flair to the table, which is heightened by the unique construction. The innovative form factor of the table captures the essence of the geological formation, while also functioning as a metaphor for the complex and intricate connection between nature and human creativity.

Coffee tables these days aren’t just places to put down books and drinks. They’re often the center of a room, specifically a living room, both in location and in design. They do more than just add visual interest in a space but, in many homes, also reflect the owner’s tastes and sometimes their aspirations.

That’s especially true if you get the opportunity to design your own coffee table or get someone to do it for you. This wood and glass design, for example, tries to capture feelings of welcoming warmth as well as structural strength. And what better way to represent those ideas than by putting the semblance of a glorious mountain right in the center of your living room.

Designer: Prerna Panjwani

The Rock of Gibraltar is a majestic sight that inspires awe not just with its height but with its distinctive shape as well. It’s almost like a ship resting in the ocean and a testament to the Earth’s geological history. It isn’t as imposing as other mountains, making it the perfect fit for a coffee table design.

The Vista coffee table, however, doesn’t simply mold or carve the shape of the mountain. It instead assembles layers of rosewood panels cut to the rough shape of the Rock of Gibraltar. The layers are held together by a few sticks of wood, creating very visible gaps in between each step.

The resulting aesthetic is similar to those cardboard topographic maps some students are told to make for their science projects. It’s almost like an artistic representation of a geographic form, leaving just enough details for our minds to fill in the gaps. At the same time, this layered design is like a metaphor for the natural formation of the mountain itself, built up layer by layer over hundreds if not thousands of years.

The Vista coffee table tries to combine the lofty image of mountains with the grounding materials of wood. It’s definitely a conversation starter among guests seeing it for the first time, or even between friends revisiting memories of the table’s arrival. Perhaps an unintended feature of the design is the gaps that can be used to hold or hide objects, almost like the man-made structures that have been built around the mountain, also a metaphor for the clutter that humans create around nature.

They can also set their learning record to better manage their learning curve. These nifty features help students to better understand and control how much time they spend studying, and how much spend they spend on breaks.

The partitions can be adjusted to differentiate between study time and break time, ensuring students focus while studying, and relax while taking a break. Currently, the Peask is a concept, but such a smart furniture design could help students improve their learning and concentration capabilities.
